iCAN information: Opt out of unwanted sales calls to your mobile

Mobile phone users can send a simple, free text message to opt out of unsolicited sales and marketing calls.

The ‘text-to-register’ service, launched by the Telephone Preference Service (TPS)  and Ofcom, enables mobile phone users to add their number to the UK’s official ‘do not call’ database by texting ‘TPS’ and their email address to 85095. When you register you will receive a text reply from the TPS confirming your number has been successfully added to its database.

You should notice a gradual reduction in unsolicited sales and marketing voice calls to your mobile after a few days, although it can take up to 28 days for the service to become fully effective.

It is illegal for organisations to make unsolicited sales and marketing calls to numbers registered with the TPS unless they have a person’s consent to do so but be careful not to give consent without meaning to. When we buy or register for something online we are often asked for our phone number and we’re also usually  asked to tick a box to say that we have read the terms and conditions. Often we can’t complete the order or registration process until we’ve provided this information and ticked the box. Somewhere in the small print there will be a statement explaining that the website can share our personal details with other interested parties or partners which means that we’ve consented to our details being passed on to other companies who are likely to cold call us.

If you or somebody you know has been caught out by a scam please contact one of our specialist officers, Linda or Sue on 0151 511 8785 or 0151 511 8775, who are already working with people in Halton who have lost thousands of pounds to scams.
